After paying for a pro account on Podomatic, episode 2 is finally live!
Recorded a few weeks ago before Nick went off for his trip to England, after discovering that he’d be missing his chance to check out the new Doctor Who Experience at Cardiff Amelia and Khai decided to regale Nick with tales of how the previous Doctor Who Experience in London was before talking about their love for the Doctor in all his previous incarnations.
They also somehow end up segway-ing into ponies and wigs. God knows why.
WARNING: Around the 00:28 to 00:33 minute mark there are a couple of pretty bad crackles but bear with it as it sorts itself out. Sorry about that.
Here it is! Episode 1 of our geeky little podcast, where Amelia, Khai and Nick talk random geekiness for the sheer sake of it. And what better way for these three wannabe geeks to start of their podcast than to talk about the best comic book movie so far - The Avengers.
SPOILERS ALERT: the Avengers movie has been out for quite a while in most countries and this episode is spoileriffic like you read about, so if you somehow haven’t seen it or live in a country that still hasn’t gotten it, you may not want to download this.
As for us Malaysians, we got to watch it in the cinemas a week before the States. Hehe.
We’ll be posting up a new episode once every two weeks so you can either check in on our website here, subscribe via our podcast RSS feed by clicking here or subscribe via iTunes by clicking here.

Day 2 of the Malaysian Comic Convention. Better than yesterday. Why? Cos this time I didn’t have to carry my god damn camera bag and tripod all over the place. Decided to ask Khairil M Bahar whether I could use his Sony NEX5N as he would most definitely be shooting with his Sony NEX-7….

So here I am, at the Malaysian Comic Convention 2012 located at KDU College. Shooting freely and randomly, currently staying with filmmaker Khairil M Bahar. Decided to just pop over to do some shoots with him. Quite interesting really. So here are some photos of what was going on.

It all started off with Amelia Chen.
Or, as I like to call her, The Inceptionist.

Amelia Chen, pictured above working at The Hub greeting me the way any good Vulcan should.
You see, I do a podcast with Amelia called WAMMcast over at We Are Malaysian Made interviewing people from the local arts scene and, when we can’t get anybody, talk about the local creative arts scene in general. But we realized more and more that we’d very often pull out very geeky references and if the guest was a fellow geek we’d all geek out in geeky ways.
This one time, on WAMMcast, we discussed with the actors of a play what their characters in the play would be if they were Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Apparently the writer of the play was so insulted he brought up the possibility of legal action.
True story.
It was incidents such as this and many others where we’d find ourselves referencing comic books, TV shows and movies that I’m guessing led Amelia to turn to me and incept this very simple thought in my head,
“We should start a geek podcast.”
Unlike Leo and his merry band of misfits, she did not have to go through layers of dreams to implant this idea in my head. She just said it in passing.
Then she said it again.
And again.
And then she said,
“We should call it Geeks In Malaysia.”

Me (Khairil M Bahar), pictured above trying to resist Amelia’s inception.
After that, the thought was firmly implanted and we started talking about it more and more - a geek podcast talking about the geeky stuff we found interesting. There were plenty of geeky podcasts on the interwebs (anything from Nerdist is solid gold, in my opinion) but nothing much from Malaysia (apart from the very awesome McYap & Fries podcast that you should totally subscribe to. In truth, we actually forgot to namecheck the McYap & Fries in the original post - a product of writing a blog entry at 5am - which was pretty dumb of as as it has incurred their mighty wrath. We have offered up some greasy man-love to appease them and are awaiting their response).
Plus, I was a filmmaker (shameless plug) and Amelia was an actress - we could do videos too. We’d already started doing some on We Are Malaysian Made, why not do geeky ones?
But we needed something else. Something to add to the mix to complete it.
We needed a third person. Only then the circle would be complete and we’d be like The Trio in season 6 of Buffy.
Except, you know, less evil.
And we knew just the geek for the job - Nick Dorian.

Nick Dorian, pictured above ready to fill in the gap with his sonic screwdriver.
A fellow fan of Doctor Who (and a very big fan of David Tennant), with Nick on board the circle was complete and we began recording our podcasts and shooting videos.
At the time of writing, we’ve already recorded about 4 or 5 episodes and a couple of videos which we’ll be posting up as the weeks progress. Our YouTube channel is already up with our short film ‘The Ewoks Are Cool!’ and once the podcast is set up you’ll be able to subscribe to us on iTunes or listen here on our site.
We’ve already recorded podcasts about the recent ‘Avengers’ movie and upcoming geek flicks, the Doctor Who Experience in the UK, TV shows that have been cancelled, renewed and/or coming soon and more. We also shot a ton of interviews and footage at the recent Malaysian Games & Comics Convention which we’ll be posting up at our YouTube channel as well.
So if all this sounds up your alley then follow us here on our tumblr site as well as twitter and Facebook and YouTube and iTunes (when it’s up) and enjoy your dose of geekery.
And if you happen to have anything geek-related that you’d like us to shout out about or cover then drop us a line at geeksinmalaysia@gmail.com or click the ‘Ask’ button on this site. We don’t just want to talk about all the cool geek stuff that’s happening in the west, we want to highlight our own local geekery too!
So if you draw comics or run a comic book store, making a cool game or animation or fan film, heck, maybe you and your friends started up a Dungeons & Dragons club and you want us to shout it out to get new members, guess what - there’s a site for y’all and it’s right here.
